This half term, our main topic is based around the stories of Percy the Park Keeper.

We will be reading and discussing a variety of these stories, and will be thinking about seasonal changes and how these affect us and animals. The children have already really enjoyed retelling some of the stories using props and have begun to try to write lists of jobs that Percy might have to do around the park during the seasons. We will also be reading and discussing a variety of Julia Donaldson books, such as Stickman and The Gruffalo, and linking this to discussions about seasonal changes.

During Healthy Schools week and we will be doing a variety of activities to do with keeping fit, eating healthy food and keeping ourselves safe. We have numerous external visitors coming to work with the children throughout the week and we will be taking part in judo and football sessions among others. Towards the end of the year we will be learning about The Christmas Story and in the final week of term, there is the Christmas performance in St James church to look forward to, where the reception classes form the nativity.

Below are details of what the children we doing in each of the different areas of learning and what we hope the children will learn throughout the half term.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development:

We will be encouraging pupils to have a go at new activities and celebrating all the pupils’ successes both in school and out of school. We will read and discuss relevant stories and play games that encourage turn taking, listening and a shared fun experience. We will be encouraging the children to try to do things independently and to ask for adult help if they need it.

Children will be learning:

  • To work with one another, sparing spaces and learning to take turns.
  • To try out new things.
  • To have a go at things independently but to ask for adult help if needed.
  • That we are all different but we are all special.

Communication and Language:

In small groups and as a class, we will play games that encourage speaking and listening skills. We will be encouraging pupils to listen to simple instructions and follow them. We will be reading and discussing stories in small groups and trying to listen to what others in the group have to say.

Children will be learning:

  • To listen carefully when others are speaking.
  • To express themselves through talk.
  • To think about their own feelings and the feelings of others.
  • To concentrate and sit quietly during an appropriate activity.

Physical Development:

We follow the ‘Real P.E.’ scheme of work which teaches children key skills, such as maintaining their own space and learning to balance, through lots of fun stories, games and songs. In class we will be doing lots of fun activities and games using play dough, clothes pegs, scissors, pens, pencils and crayons, to develop hand strength.

Children will be learning:

  • How to keep safe in lessons.
  • How we can balance and travel with control and co-ordination.
  • How we can use and control small equipment with our hands e.g. pencil control and cutting skills.


We will read and discuss a variety of stories. We will be learning letter sounds and beginning to sound out and blend when reading written text. We will be beginning to learn how to form each letter correctly and how to write our names.

Children will be learning:

  • To listen to stories and discuss what the stories with increasing attention and recall.
  • To hear and say the initial sounds in words.
  • To begin to write own name correctly.
  • To use and write clearly identifiable letters to communicate meaning.


We will be doing lots of practical maths activities to explore numbers 0 – 10 and beyond with a range of objects. We will incorporate number and counting into stories, nursery rhymes and songs. We will use puppets, role play and drama to count, recognise and order numbers.

Children will be learning:

  • To recognise ,order and write numerals 1 – 5.
  • To count up to 10 actions and objects.
  • To count up to 5 objects from a larger group.

Understanding the World:

We will spend lots of time talking about ourselves and listening to each other through role play, puppets and drama. We will discuss the daily weather and go for walks in our local environment to discover signs of the changing seasons. Through a variety of fun activities we will encourage the children to question, explore and discover:

‘What might happen if…….?”, “What might happen next…..?”, “What could we change….?”.

Children will be learning:

  • That there are similarities and differences between people and to understand that we are all special and unique.
  • To observe and question aspects of their familiar world.

Expressive Art and Design:

We will use our voices and bodies to respond to and make rhythms and music. We will explore colour, design and texture to create our own pictures and 3D objects. We will experiment and explore colour mixing.

Children will be learning:

  • To sing songs, make music and dance, and experiment with ways of changing these.
  • To experiment with colour,design and texture and can explore different materials and tools.
  • To express their feelings and ideas through role play, drama, music and art.
